Flashback Friday: Soccer Edition

Did you play soccer when you were a kid? Probably you did. If not, what did you do in the springtime? Everyone was playing soccer. When I started playing soccer, all the town teams in Cache Valley had their own color of uniforms. Each season, more towns ad0pted the blue and gold reversible jersey that many rec teams in Cache Valley still wear. Not Newton. We were the hold-outs season after season and within a few years, we were still sporting our sweet green and yellow unis while every other team had switched. Let's just say things move at a slower pace out there. We hung on a good four years longer than the other teams.

I really love my collection of soccer pictures - it's fun to look at them and remember what all the girls I grew up with looked like at our various ages. For your viewing pleasure, here are a few:

Circa 1987:
I won't name names just in case these girls don't want childhood pictures of themselves broadcast across the web. I'm on the left on the top row. The sun is obviously killing our eyes in this picture. Perhaps the photographer could have found a better location.

And here's the individual shot from the same year. I'd like to point out that for some reason that only an eight-year-old would understand, I chose to douse my bangs in the drinking fountain about five minutes before the picture was taken. I never did have stellar bangs, but this choice really didn't help my appearance in this picture.

1993

1993 and we were finally wearing the blue and yellow uniforms. I think this was our second season in them. Our team decided to break with the traditional front row/back row approach and try something fun. Weren't we clever? Some of us struck a vogue pose. Sweet. I'm on the top right this time.

Cole's team, the Black Panthers (which is what you get when you let four and five year olds with no knowledge of the Civil Rights movement choose their team name), started their season a few weeks ago. Cole's favorite part - defending the goal (and snacks, of course - which have come a loooong way from the oranges and water that we had as kids). He really hates it when the other team scores and hates it even more when his team loses, so that has translated into defense. Not a bad strategy, I guess.

Who is looking at your bangs, let's be honest. Your legs steal the show.

hahahaha!!!! I am laughing so hard right now!!!! Thanks for the flashback- those pictures are stellar! We really have some good soccer memories. I am glad that Cole will play- brooklyn sorta played last year and informed us this year she would NOT be playing. There is always next year.

Hilarious!!! I love it! I remember playing the infamous green and yellow newton team. Lewiston's team kept up their own uni's as well. Ours were red and white if you remember. I thought they were awesome. I was so dissapointed when we changed to the blue and yellow like everyone else. My boys are dressing in those same blue and yellow uni's to play in a game today! I love that Cole gets a "cool" uni. I guess the only downfall is that you have to buy a new one every year.

I would be less worried about your bangs and a little more embarrassed about the rolled socks you are sporting in the individual photo. I rmembered all the girls in the photos--how fun!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Oh my Gosh, Katie. This made me laugh out loud...for a LONG time. (This is Karen Cottle--Trenton, btw.) I love it when my blog-surfing from other's blogs pays off in a blast from the past. I must say, I laughed the hardest at Rory's look. Man, she'd give the entire Saved By the Bell cast a run for their money with that stare!!!

Thanks!

That is SWEET!! I had a little moment of panic when I saw your title :) I was sure there was going to be a great shot of me in there. I like the sassy older shot. Way to change it up!
