Politics

Since it is a political kind of week, I thought I'd share this old gem from Senator Hatch:

So there you have it, fellow Newtonites. We all know politicians never never never lie.

Did you know when I was 17 I was giving a talk in Sacrament meeting and when I scanned the crowd from the podium, I noticed Senator Hatch was in attendance? Nothing like a little added pressure. He told me good job afterwards.

In other political news, I voted this week. I wanted to go while Cole and Annie were both in school, but decided to wait until I picked them up so I could give them a little civics lesson. Here's how it went down:

We arrived right in the midst of the lunchtime crowd, so we had to wait a bit. Cole was extremely fascinated with the little electronic device the poll worker used to load my ballot card and asked her 75 questions about it. Sweet little old lady had probably used all her tech-savvy to figure out how to work it and was completely stumped by his questions. Finally it was my turn and Cole sadly left the lady behind without figuring out said device. He hates it when he can't figure something out. Luckily, he was soon fascinated by the computer in the polling booth. Unfortunately, I failed to explain the concept of a secret ballot to Cole and he read over my shoulder the whole time - "why did you vote for (insert name)?", "who are you going to vote for next?", "what does that question mean?",). And he's not a quiet person.

Annie, meanwhile, was sad the whole time. Why? I vote at the Senior Citizen Center and they were serving up lunch. But, mean mom that I am, I would not let her go get a tray and some lunch. It should be noted that I'm sure Annie did not really want to eat the food, given that they were not serving butter, noodles, or sugar. She just thought the lunch line and the trays looked like fun.

Ben was an angel. Thank you Ben.

Next year, I think I'll skip the civics lesson.

Boo

Hope you had a delightfully frightful Halloween filled with lots of sugar...

...a few spooks...

...and plenty of smiles.

Happy Halloween!

P.S. Cole, after much pleading, carved his own pumpkin this year. Can you tell which one is his? Probably not. He's about as good as me.

Autumn Day

Dear Dad-

We are having a lovely time playing in the leaves today. It's just the kind of chilly fall day you love. Wish you were here. Hurry home!

Love,

The Troops

Black Island Farms

Have you heard of Black Island Farms? Of all the fall activities we have done, it's my favorite. Lots of fun stuff to do - petting zoo, pig races, big slides, train rides, bounce house, donuts, wagon ride...it really has it all. My kids have been waiting since last year for this and Cole is already asking when we get to go back.

My favorite part? The kiddie corn maze. I really hate corn mazes. I don't like being lost and I'm a teensy bit allergic to corn. Nothing fun about them for me. But...the kiddie corn maze you can't really get lost in. Loved it. In and out in about 4 minutes. Perfect. They do have some grown-up corn mazes if that happens to be your cup of tea. Twilight themed even.

Sick babies are no fun...

...but snuggling them sure is. Get well soon, little ones.

Oktoberfest

It was our annual family Oktoberfest last week. The point of this celebration is basically for Floyd to talk to the kids about his mission and for me to be a sweet wife and cook German food for him. German food is not on the top of my list of foreign food I enjoy. Too bad. If he had served in Mexico, I could be a sweet wife a lot more frequently. That being said, this year's menu was quite delicious:

Rot Kraut (cooked red cabbage with apples and seasonings): Floyd said it was quite authentic. I liked it a lot. Cole? Not so much. Annie would not try it.
Potato Pancakes serve with sour cream and applesauce: Yum. I was surprised I liked the sour cream and applesauce combination.Schnitzel: Very delicious. I was a bit prejudiced against these - blame it on Weinerschnitzel, but they were super good. Cole gobbled them up, which I was a bit bummed about because I wanted the leftovers.
And for dessert, Apple Torte. Obviously good. I do like German desserts. Annie was quite mad the cake didn't have frosting, but when she was finally convinced to try it, even she thought it was good.
For us, Oktoberfest also means bobbing for apples and Ben was a champion apple bobber. He grabbed them like crazy and tried to gnaw on them with his two front teeth. The floor got a little wet, but there were no serious wipe-outs.

I think it was a success because when Floyd walked in the house, he proclaimed, "it smells like a German house." Ordinarily, I'm not sure that would be a compliment, but for one night a year I'll take it as one.
