Island Hopping

Okay, so actually we just "Island Hopped" since there was only one Island involved. Everytime we drive to Salt Lake and pass the Syracuse exit, I say, "I'd like to go to Antelope Island sometime," so we finally did. Floyd had a day off work and we spent the afternoon out there. It was pretty and relaxing and really quiet. Kind of weird to look across at the Wasatch Front and realize how close to civilization you are and yet how isolated it is.

We went on a little hike and discovered all kinds of rocks. Cole told me this week, "If anyone has a question about rocks, they can just ask Uncle Barry or me. We know all about them." Uncle Barry is a geologist, so he really does know all about them. I guess Cole thinks he learned it all in his couple of hours on the Island.

There is an old cabin site on the Island (the oldest anglo-built structure still on its original foundation in the state) that we went and toured. It was interesting and made me grateful not to have been a pioneer. I like the idea of "living off the land", but only if I have electricity and a real bathroom and cleaning supplies and a real mattress and...you get the picture.

Here is a view from Antelope Island to another island in the Great Salt Lake. We'll say it's Stansbury Island because I don't actually know which one it is and I'm sure none of you do either. We were leaving right at sunset and it was really pretty to watch the sun set across the lake. Almost like watching it set across the ocean. Almost.

On a related note, after we exited Cole said, "hey, this is the way to Carter and Jackson's house." Carter and Jackson are Brooke's little boys and they do not live in Syracuse, but then I remembered that the last time we went to visit them, we picked up Kim from her sister's house on our way there. Her sister does live in Syracuse and we did take that same exit. That was 11 months ago. Seriously, I think his memory must be photographic!

Cole is definitely smartest child I have ever met. I can't believe he recognized Syracuse. And I am very glad I have someone else to ask, because I think Barry is getting sick of my hundreds of rock questions.

Looks like a fun trip to Antelope island...it is sort of strange how many weird islands and things are out that way...who knows what they are. And wow, Mr. Cole...that is one good memory he has!

I think our family needs to go there too....weird that you live so close to something and have never visited.

So Brooke has 2 little boys! I want to ask where she lives, but I know that is against blogging rules.....

I also have never been to Antelope Island and have been curious about it. It looks like you guys had a blast there. Although it looks kinda chilly!
